Shopping for the benefit of . . .

Note that the Nonprofiteer and her fellow bloggers aren’t the only people concerned about the increasingly incestuous relationship between charity and retail.  Now a Senator proposes to regulate these "partnerships" to make sure that they actually benefit charities–what a concept!   

It’s unlikely this regulatory scheme will go anywhere in the short run: as long as there’s a Republican administration, we’re lucky if we get our water free of carcinogens, our meat free of prions or our toys free of lead.  But it’s a nice idea, and demonstrates the growing power of the philanthropic blogosphere (especially, in this case, Lucy Bernholz) to shape the public debate.
