Cool contributions

Two recent donations that caught our eye:

As reported in last week’s Chicago Reader, a chef in Chicago named Mary Ellen Diaz sells fancy take-out to those of us too rich and lazy to cook so she can underwrite providing the selfsame meals to people whose failure to cook is the result of their failure to have a kitchen, or any other portion of a home.  Check out her elegant (in every sense!) scheme at firstslice.org.

Rather than discard furniture rendered obsolete (or merely dowdy) by renovation, the Hotel Viking in tony Newport, Rhode Island will give it all away to Child and Family Services of Newport County.    Apparently the volume of castoffs is sufficient to furnish just about half the agency’s housing units.  Maybe the huge armoires designed for stereo-tv-VCR combos will look out of place–maybe there will be a shortage of kitchen-usable or dining-room tables–but recipients most likely will be able to find a use for sturdy beds, chairs, hide-a-beds and desks.  A graceful and gracious gesture.

I have a very soft spot for First Slice. they provided dinner for the first fundraiser New Orleans feast for Next Steps. For those of you who missed it, which I suppose is almost everybody that is reading this, the food was wonderful
